Riverside Camping Activities

Got a freshwater riverside camping adventure in the midst? Here’s just a few of the activities you can delve into!

Perching yourself along a majestic stretch of freshwater is the quintessential dream that comes with owning a camper trailer. But aside from relaxing and soaking up the tranquillity that comes with such a spot, what can you do to stay entertained? Well, let’s start by saying that the possibilities are as endless as the ripples in the water. Yep, there are mountains of exciting activities just waiting to be explored. So, get ready to dive into a diverse array of river-based adventures.

1. FLY FISHING
Few experiences rival the tranquil satisfaction of casting a line into the gentle currents of a river, hoping for that elusive tug on the other end. Fly fishing is not just a sport; it’s a dance between angler and fish, a delicate balance of patience, technique, and observation.
For the uninitiated, mastering the art of fly fishing may seem daunting, but fear not. Start with the basics such as understanding the behaviour of the fish, identifying suitable spots, and selecting the right gear. Observing the river’s flow and noting where the fish congregate can significantly increase your chances of success.

TOP TIPS
– Study the local insect life to match your fly patterns effectively.
– Practice proper casting techniques to avoid spooking the fish.
– Embrace the catch-and-release ethos to conserve fish populations and preserve the ecosystem.

2. KAYAKING
If you crave a more immersive river experience, kayaking offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity. Spend the day gliding effortlessly over the water’s surface, feeling the cool breeze on your face as you navigate through meandering channels and thrilling rapids alike.
Before setting out on your kayaking expedition, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with basic paddling techniques and safety precautions. Ensure you have the appropriate gear, including a well-fitted life jacket and a sturdy kayak designed for river use. Whether you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping rapids or serene stretches of water, kayaking promises an unforgettable journey.

TOP TIPS
– Choose a kayak with ample storage space for snacks, water, and essential gear.
– Check weather conditions and water levels before embarking on your adventure.
– Use waterproof bags to protect any valuables that can’t be left on shore.
– Bring a long length of rope to help pull the kayak up any rock, rapids or hazards.

3. CATCHING YABBIES
For a hands-on activity that’s equal parts exciting and educational, why not try your hand at catching a few yabbies? There are a few different breeds of yabby to catchalong with several ways to do it.
In freshwater rivers, scouring the shallows with a net for these elusive freshwater crustaceans can be thrilling for the kids. To increase your chances of success, seek out areas with abundant vegetation or submerged structures where yabbies are known to dwell.
For saltwater estuaries, perhaps catching a few yabbies for bait using a yabby pump in the sand will be equally as exhilarating for the kids.

TOP TIPS
– Experiment with different bait scents to lure them in. Rotten meat, carp, chicken carcasses and dog biscuits are reportedly very effective in freshwater rivers and dams.
– Utilize a bait bag to contain your bait and prevent it from dispersing in the water.
– Be sure to lookup your state fishing regulations to determine the appropriate fishing methods for your area

4. LILOING
For those seeking a more leisurely river experience, liloing offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Drift lazily downstream on an inflatable raft, soaking up the sun and scenery as you go. The best part is, this is an extremely budget friendly activity as your inflatable raft can quite literally be anything that floats. That includes old inflatable air mattresses and tyre tubes.
Before setting out on your liloing adventure, ensure your inflatable raft is sturdy and equipped with ample space for lounging. Pack essentials such as sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout your journey. As you float along, take the time to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and the serenity of the river’s gentle embrace.

TOP TIPS
– Choose a lilo with built-in cup holders to keep your beverages secure while you relax.
– Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
– Opt for a durable inflatable raft if you’re in shallow waters, especially if there’s rocks around.

5. ROPE SWING
With a length of rope, a bit of tree branch and a deep swimming hole, you can manufacture a DIY rope swing to keep the youngsters (and young at heart) entertained. Yep, a rope swing over a swimming hole has been an Aussie staple for years, and as far as riverside camping activities go, it still reigns supreme.

TOP TIPS
– Ensure the water is deep enough and there are no hazards underneath.
– Double check that the tree branch you are securing your rope to is string enough to handle more than enough weight.
– The best knot to tie your rope swing with is the Bowline knot, which is super reliable and doesn’t tighten when load is applied.

6. ROCK BALANCING ART
Rock Balancing Art, also known as stone stacking, can be enjoyed by the whole family along rocky riverbanks. Looks for rocks with flat surfaces and interesting textures to make visually appealing sculptures. This age-old tradition is simple yetrequires concentration all while allowing you to engage with nature in a creative and mindful way. It’s a truly wonderful way to un-wind, destress and connect with the natural world around you.

TOP TIPS
– Start with a flat and stable base to start your sculpture.
– Use the three-point rule; ensure each rock is in contact with three other rocks to maintain stability.
– Embrace imperfection. Remember, its about the journey not the destination. Nature is rarely symmetrical, yet it’s beautiful all the same.

7. CARP FISHING
If there’s one thing that is all but guaranteed in Aussies rivers, it’s the presence of carp. This presents the perfect opportunity to catch a great fighting fish, but to help rid the waters of an invasive species of fish. While they’re not known as a good eating fish here in Australia, in other parts of the world they are considered a delicacy.

TOP TIPS
– Try using corn or dough as bait on a small hook.
– Carp are cautious and don’t like weight on the line, so use a small sinker above a long leader line.
– Throw a few extra corn kernels in the water as berley to create plenty of interest

THE WRAP UP
Riverside camping offers a wealth of opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and connection with the natural world. Whether you’re casting a line, paddling down the stream, or simply lounging on a lilo, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and embark on an unforgettable journey along the banks of your favourite river.
