Off-Grid tested, Off-Road: Kokoda Scout
It’s a tall task keeping kids under hard-top cover, off-road. Yet, in the single-axle Scout, Kokoda delivers ample family fun within 18ft dimensions. In fact, the Hooper family already gave the previous version a thumbs up during the What’s Up Downunder Family Tour in 2021. This time, while camping remote for Tough Tested action at 4×4 Loveday Adventure Park, Kokoda appraised it’s off-grid capabilities while pitting it against a competitive class in our Club 4×4 Insurance Tough Tested programme.
What makes this Scout at Loveday likeable is its out-of-the-box all terrain acumen. Kokoda backs its off-road specs, equipping this Scout with the same DO35 coupling, 16in alloy wheels and Mud Terrains and 3T Tuff Ride suspension with EFS shocks fitted standard at the factory floor. That’s ample for the compact body cleverly packaging a separate shower and toilet, generous cabinetry with piano hinges and stainless steel rollers, a 138L fridge-freezer, twin bunks and an east-west bed. There’s room for legs around the L-shape lounge, a four-hob cooktop and air-con.
The Kokoda Scout 2260kg Tare pays on the straight during the Club 4×4 Insurance Mega Test Track. It is a single axle, a consideration on the MSA 4X4 Moguls and NCE Wombat Holes, but with Summer Salvato towing with a Silverado, its full 8.15m length cleared the bumps. Her familiarity with the Scout resulted in skilled performances on the track–to Kokoda’s credit–following trends from previous years: “It felt safe, it was comfortable and it was fun,” Summer concluded, while crossing the line penalty-free.
As our cohort unwound at the Berri Riverside HP, Summer camped in the Riverland semi-arid climate unplugged. Well considered choices come bundled for now in a 7K complementary bonus with the Scout as a result, with diesel heating, 12V fans in the lounge and at each berth, bug lighting, 400W in solar and 150Ah lithium battery making the grade.
The external speakers didn’t do much, so Kokoda now bundles a Bluetooth speaker with light in the bonus instead.
The Scout’s off-grid standard, meanwhile, includes a BMPRO BatteryPlus35-II-HA BMS, twin 95L tanks, portable grey tank, twin gas cylinders and twin jerry holders and slide-outs for a fridge and genie–ideal for long, far-flung family adventures.
