Curl up in casual comfort off-grid in the Vacationer Rough Rider 233C, a clever family space offering divided living
When you’re travelling for an extended time, it’s not always roses and sunshine. The What’s Up Downunder team aren’t exempt, judging by the angry skies marring our “Summer Series” High Country adventure. That didn’t stop Vacationer Rough Rider delivering. In fact, the spacious and modern interior of the 233C–one of two Vacationers on tour–looked quite the haven in the downpours.
Packaged in the Rough Rider specification, this striking family layout in a 23ft internal configuration offered plenty for our adventures which included a night’s layover at our free camp. The premium off-grid spec is equipped with a 120L grey water tank, two 95L freshwater tanks with room for a third, 600W of solar up top plus a 300Ah lithium Victron battery bank.
One-piece Roof
Like all Vacationer models, this Rough Rider has an aluminium frame and is equipped with many niceties like the Cruisemaster coupling and suspension. It also features an off-road flat chassis maximising the clearance offered by the XT Freestyle coils. The twin axle setup provides a 3.7T ATM rating that’s upgradable to 4.1T–for a decent payload but you will need a big vehicle to tow this one. The 16in alloy wheels are shod with quality Mickey Thompson ATs.
Everything is well insulated and protected against weathering, thanks to the fibreglass roof and one-piece honeycomb floor and a single-piece fibreglass ceiling and walls. Dust reduction also comes standard.
Designer Colours
The kitchen is well set-up for touring, with an all gas oven and grill, 274L fridge freezer and microwave up top for occasional use.
Adjacent, Vacationer provides a plush family-friendly L-shape lounge upholstered with high density foam. It’s well put together, with the waterfall benchtop finished in ‘Canyon Palace Oak’ and smoky cabinetry in two tones softening the sleek white walls with black trims. While Vacationer offers a variety of interior colours if you’re struggling to choose, the design team has prepared nine gorgeous optional colour palettes for inspiration.
The palette here is beautifully complemented by soft lighting boosting its homely appeal, giving our crews somewhere to cosy up in split system comfort on the queen size bed with a pillowtop mattress, between hauntings at our high country hang-outs during our wet escape.
Divided Living
In the demonstrator Vacationer Rough Rider 233C on tour, families can well and truly ditch the communal bedtime with not one but two doors separating the east-west bunks from the main living quarters.
That’s courtesy of the large layout and mid-ship bathroom featuring a surprisingly spacious shower and room around the toilet. For those luxuries, there’s no real bathroom benchtop space but you do get a wider-than-usual floor to ceiling mirror–a welcome standout if you find yourself having to dine out a little more than you’d planned. Having the bunks run east-west saves on space but Vacationer still allocates ample room for storage here granting independence for the whole crew.
